"We love the 'Importance of Activity for the Elderly' inservice. We really believe that keeping our residents active, alert and stimulated mentally as well as physically provides a better quality of life. Sometimes as we work with new caregivers, we have a hard time getting them to recognize the importance of this. But, once we have them do this inservice, we notice a huge change in their attitude and we see them get more involved with the activities. We have even had some employees come to us with new ideas that they would like to try. This inservice has really made a difference!"

Keeping Your Elderly Clients Active

As people live longer and longer, staying active and enjoying life is becoming more important than every before.  Your CNAs spend a lot of time with their elderly clients and therefore should know all the tricks and tips to safely keep them active.  Below are a few tips for your CNAs:
  1. Remember that the key to activity and the elderly is to understand the needs, abilities and interests of each of your clients.  The more you understand about your clients, the more you can help them participate in a full and active life- no matter what their age of health status!
  2. Keep in mind that activities are based on what clients like- not what you like.  You are there to help meet their needs.
  3. Be creative when thinking up activities for your clients.  What's the worst thing that could happen?
