June has arrived, which means that CNA Week is almost here! CNA Week is a great time to provide opportunities for your nursing assistants to enhance their skills and knowledge. By recognizing and supporting lifelong learning among your aides, you'll develop-and retain-a team of top-notch CNAs! |
Lifelong Learning Tips:
In the next few weeks, we'll share some ideas for how to create a culture of lifelong learning at your workplace. Here are today's suggestion:
- Pay attention to your own attitude toward inservice time. Instead of "Okay, Gang. We've got to get through this so we make the surveyors happy and you get your annual hours done," try to convey this sentiment: "WOW...we've got a great opportunity to learn about this subject together and I value any experience you bring to this subject."
- Start each inservice meeting with each employee discussing one thing they have learned since the last meeting.
- Have an aide lead a portion of each inservice meeting.
- Bring in speakers from a broad spectrum of community to enhance your inservice presentations.
- Build a library of books on a variety of subjects that might appeal to your nursing assistants: health care, motivation, elder care, parenting, etc.
- Encourage skills that go beyond client care: money management; financial planning; career planning; resume writing, etc.
- Institute a "clinical ladder", including a preceptor program (link this to Being a Preceptor), to encourage professional growth and a desire to continue learning among your nursing assistants.
